Covenant House was created in 1981 by Charleston citizens and groups committed to helping those with the fewest resources. Their mission was to work for justice by offering direct services for West Virginians in need while creating social change through advocacy and education. The hallmark program, the Drop-In Center, operates to this day as the soul of our organization. This day shelter provides respite for those living on the streets, providing them with free shower and laundry facilities, first aid, health education, medical referrals, food assistance, and job-readiness referrals.

The Community Kitchens of Birmingham is an independent nonprofit in Birmingham, Alabama, that is making a difference in the community by feeding anyone who is hungry, regardless of their race or socio-economic background. The Culinary Training Academy (CTA) is doing its part to try to help the hard-hit Las Vegas community recover from the recession by offering low-cost hospitality training, an affordable restaurant and catering services, and free meals to needy children. The CTA is a dynamic place—with guest-room-attendant students in the mock hotel suites learning to make beds in under 5 minutes, professional chefs in the large training kitchen preparing food for the restaurant and event center, and food servers in the Westside Bistro honing their customer service skills.

Casa de Esperanza de los Niños — the House of Hope for Children — is a safe place for children who are in crisis due to abuse, neglect or the effects of HIV. They provide residential, medical and psychological care according to the needs of each child. Counseling is also available to the parents in appropriate situations. Casa de Esperanza strives to break the destructive cycle of child abuse by offering safe homes to children of families in crisis. The goal is to return physically and emotionally healthy children to stabilized homes where caregivers can safely provide daily care.

Through music, art, dance and athletic programs, Alaska Pride works to teach leadership skills to kids who lack access to after school and summer activities.
