Weather Summary
As of 16:29 Central, Thu., 5 Nov., 2009
Northeast - Upper level energy will give rise to a deepening area of low pressure off the Mid-Atlantic coast today. As the upper level energy streams over the region today it will provide enough lift in the atmosphere to produce scattered rain showers near the coast and mixture of rain and snow showers over the interior portions of the Northeast.
West - A power house storm system will be spinning over the Gulf of Alaska through the end of the week. This storm will sweep a strong cold front into the Pacific Northwest Thursday into the day on Friday. Heavy rains will drench the western portions of Washington and Oregon today into tonight. The heaviest rains will fall on the western facing slopes of the Cascade Mountains where 4 to 5 inches or rain will fall. Snow levels in the Cascades will initially be high, starting out as high as 10,000 feet. Once the cold front sweeps through tonight those snow levels are expected to crash, lowering to as low as 3,500 feet by Friday. This system will also be accompanied by strong winds. While the strongest winds will be found on the mountain tops where winds may gust in excess of 70 mph, lower elevations locations such as Portland and Seattle will still see sustained winds of 20 to 30 mph with higher gusts.
South - High pressure will dominate most of the South over the next two days leading to widespread sunny skies. Easterly flow off the waters of the Atlantic will keep shower chances going over the southeast third of Florida today. Not only will this increased onshore flow lead to scattered showers but it may also lead to dangerous riptides as a result swimmers in this area should to be vigilant from Miami Beach northward to Daytona Beach.
Midwest - A sprawling area of high pressure will dominate most of the Midwest today into the upcoming weekend. As the region gets on the backside of the high warmer temperatures will result. The exception to the rule today will be over portions of Michigan into northeast Ohio where a frontal boundary associated with a clipper system heading into the Northeast will bring some lake enhanced light rain or snow showers this morning.
