Continental Airlines Is Named Among "100 Best Companies To Work For In America"

HOUSTON, December 21, 1998 -- Continental Airlines, Inc. (NYSE: CAI.B and CAI.A) today was named one of the "100 Best Companies to Work for in America" by FORTUNE magazine in a study conducted in conjunction with the Great Place to Work Institute of San Francisco.

The study picks the nation's best employers based on a range of criteria related to the work environment and company culture, compensation and benefits, and other measures of job satisfaction.

"Since 1994 Continental has focused tremendous energy on reinventing itself, not only for its customers and investors, but also for its people," said Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Gordon Bethune. "This is an independent validation by our employees about how special Continental has become."

The FORTUNE survey was based on a 31-page questionnaire that was distributed to 225 randomly selected Continental employees. FORTUNE and the Great Place to Work Institute developed the survey and the random selection process. Employees of the selected companies were asked to evaluate trust in management, pride in work and camaraderie, and to submit company newsletters, employee handbooks and videos. The rankings will appear in the January 11 issue of FORTUNE.

"This announcement is further evidence of the incredible turn-around we have worked together to achieve, which has brought us from the bottom of FORTUNE's ‘Most Admired Companies' list to our present position as a top employer," said Greg Brenneman, president and chief operating officer.

Continental pointed to several activities which exemplified improvements in worklife at the company since 1994:
