Continental Airlines Refuses to Release Its Gates at Concourse A in Denver

Houston, October 1, 1999 -- Continental Airlines (NYSE: CAL and CAL.A) today announced that it plans to remain in Concourse A at Denver International Airport, despite a recent announcement by the city of Denver.

Continental was never consulted before the city announced earlier this week its decision to attempt to force Continental to move from Concourse A to Concourse C.

"We were surprised at the announcement. We have the absolute right to continue leasing our gates in Concourse A and not move to Concourse C," said Continental’s Corporate Real Estate and Environmental Affairs Vice President Holden Shannon. "Continental does not plan to relocate its gates."

According to the contract the airline holds with the city of Denver, Continental has the option to renew its lease at a reduced level of occupancy of three gates and associated space on Concourse A.

Continental believes it has paid far more than its fair share at Denver International Airport, including an annual $15 million assessment for a baggage system that the city has never made fully operational.
