Continental Airlines Announces New Daily Service Between New York and London/Stansted
NEW YORK, Oct. 10, 2000 -- Continental Airlines (NYSE: CAL and CAL.A) today announced that it will inaugurate daily non-stop service between New York and London/Stansted, effective May 1, 2001, subject to government approval.
This new service will be the only scheduled non-stop transatlantic service to Stansted Airport, London's third international gateway.
"With the addition of this new service, Continental now will have complete coverage of the United Kingdom for our customers," said a Continental spokesperson. "Stansted is the UK’s most modern airport and is in the midst of an expansion project that will bring capacity at the airport to 15 million passengers a year."
Continental currently flies to six destinations in the UK and Ireland, including London/Gatwick, Birmingham, Manchester, Glasgow, Dublin and Shannon. Service is also offered to London/Heathrow in conjunction with Virgin Atlantic.
Stansted Airport, 34 miles northeast of central London, is convenient for travelers to and from London, Canary Wharf and Docklands, as well as regional cities such as Cambridge, with its rapidly-growing computer and biotechnology industries.
Service between Newark International Airport and London/Stansted Airport will be operated with a 172-seat Boeing 757 aircraft, carrying 16 passengers in the BusinessFirst cabin and 156 in Economy. Flight 38 will depart Newark at 7:00 p.m., arriving at Stansted at 7:20 a.m. the next day. Flight 39 will depart London/Stansted daily at 9:30 a.m., arriving at Newark at 12:30 p.m. the same day. Flying time will be approximately seven hours 20 minutes eastbound, and eight hours westbound.
