Continental Airlines Reduces Flights Due to Severe Weather in the Northeast
NEWARK, Dec. 30, 2000 -- Continental Airlines (NYSE: CAL and CAL.A) cancelled the majority of flights today in and out of the Northeastern United States after blizzard conditions prompted the closure of major airports in the New York metropolitan area.
Continental and Continental Express cancelled 346 flights to and from all destinations in the region.
As of 5 p.m. EST, all domestic departures and arrivals at Newark International Airport, LaGuardia Airport and John F. Kennedy International Airport were cancelled.
Very limited international arrivals and departures were expected at Newark during Saturday night and early Sunday.
Continental expects to resume operations on Sunday morning with the goal of returning to near normal as quickly as possible. In an effort to accommodate customers, the airline intends to add flights where possible and to operate larger airplanes on select flights. Additional Continental employees have been called in today and Sunday to help maintain operations.
Those booked on affected Continental flights to or from destinations in the Northeast -Virginia, D.C., Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, or Maine - may voluntarily reschedule their flight with no penalty.
