Radio Talker Flies 25,012 Miles in Seven Days to Show the Skies Are Safe
Sponsored by Continental Airlines and Hyatt Hotels, Bruce Williams hopscotches the U.S. and flies to Europe twice in 48 hours - just to prove it can be done
HOUSTON, October 15, 2001 -- After a lot of trips, frequent fliers sometimes just want to sit at home. But after taking 15 flights in seven days, talk radio personality Bruce Williams has just three words to say: "Give me more."
Williams, 69, is half way through a two-week air-travel marathon in his quest to prove to his listeners throughout the U.S. that there is "absolutely nothing to fear." After the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, he has been steadfast in telling Americans that they must stick to their normal routines and not cower.
"After giving all my listeners my opinion on this subject, I felt I had an obligation and a duty to put my rear end where my mouth is, so to speak." So Williams has been sitting on Continental airplanes - all day long - and resting at Hyatt hotels when he gets a chance - each day since Oct. 8.
So far he has traveled: Tampa-Houston-Dallas-Newark-Boston-Cleveland-Denver-Newark-Houston-Phoenix-Houston-Newark-Paris-Newark-London-Newark (25,012 miles, or slightly more than the equatorial circumference of the earth). And each weeknight along the way he does his three-hour call-in radio show, without missing a beat.
Hyatt Hotels is providing lodging for Williams for nights when he's not sleeping on an airplane or can't get home. Resting just a few nights out of a full week of travel, he has stayed at Hyatt Harborside in Boston, Hyatt Regency Phoenix and Hyatt Regency Houston Airport.
"The travel industry is getting back on its feet, and Bruce's aggressive schedule is making an emphatic point that 'the show must go on,'" said Scott Miller, president of Hyatt. "Playing the role of a road warrior, Bruce deserves a good night's sleep, and Hyatt is pleased to be helping him get the rest he needs."
Starting today, Bruce's travels will take him to San Juan, Washington, D.C., Los Angeles and Honolulu, among other places. He'll have the chance to rest at Hyatt Dulles, Hyatt Regency Los Angeles and Hyatt Regency Waikiki Resort.
The Bruce Williams Show airs nightly on the Talk America Radio Network and reaches millions of listeners on approximately 200 radio stations in the U.S., Canada, Guam and the Caribbean.
