HOUSTON, October 22, 2001 -- Continental Airlines (NYSE: CAL) completed installation of secondary cockpit door restraints on all of its 338 aircraft on October 20, three days before its original target completion date of October 23, 2001.
"Reinforcing cockpit doors is just one of several measures Continental has made to enhance security both onboard the aircraft and at the airports," said a Continental Airlines spokesperson. "Thanks to the diligent efforts of our team, Continental is one of the first carriers to complete the installation providing an added level of security for our customers."
Continental worked closely with the Federal Aviation Administration and Boeing to develop effective secondary cockpit door restraints similar to a crossbar or deadbolt, depending on the aircraft, to enhance security on all of its aircraft in a short time frame.
