The Alley Theatre, recipient of the 1996 Special Tony Award, is a resident theatre company located in the heart of downtown Houston. One of the preeminent resident theatre companies in America, Alley Theatre productions have been performed on Broadway and abroad.
In 1947, Nina Vance sent out 214 postcards that read: "It's beginning! Do you want a new theatre for Houston? Meeting. 3617 Main. Bring a friend." Tucked away at the end of an alley, more than 100 people filed into Vance's first meeting and christened the 87-seat theatre the ALLEY THEATRE.
Today, under the artistic direction of Gregory Boyd, the Alley is hailed as one of America's preeminent resident theatre companies. The Alley won the 1996 Tony Award for outstanding regional theatre and has produced several significant productions that have toured the United States and abroad.
Notable Alley Theatre productions include: Tennessee Williams' never-before-seen Not About Nightingales (Tony Award nomination for Best Play)-an international collaboration with the Royal National Theatre and Vanessa and Corin Redgrave's Moving Theatre; The Civil War (Tony Award nomination for Best Musical), a new musical with Frank Wildhorn, composer of Jekyll & Hyde and The Scarlet Pimpernel; the world premiere of Eve Ensler's Lemonade; a new Hamlet, directed by Robert Wilson; and Antony and Cleopatra and Julius Caesar-an international collaboration with Moving Theatre of London.
