Low Cholesterol/ Low Fat Meals, LFML

Low Cholesterol/ Low Fat Meals are available for customers who are concerned with or are monitoring high cholesterol and or high blood fat levels. These meals are planned to support the reduction of fat intake, especially saturated fat and cholesterol from animal sources. Foods with high saturated fat content are discouraged. Polyunsaturated fat is allowed in moderation. Low fat dairy products are acceptable. Intake of fruits, vegetables and complex carbohydrates is encouraged.

Examples of items that are usually allowed on a Low Cholesterol/ Low Fat diet are:

  • Lean meat
  • Fish
  • Poultry (without skin)
  • Dried beans and peas
  • Sunflower and olive oil
  • Margarine
  • Fresh fruits with emphasis on citrus fruits
  • Fresh vegetables
  • Low fat cheese
  • Skimmed milk
  • Starches
  • Low fat yogurt
  • Rice and rice bran
  • Sugar and preserves
  • Oatmeal and oat bran
  • Barley.

Examples of items that are usually prohibited on a Low Cholesterol/ Low Fat diet are:

  • Fried and fatty foods
  • Animal fats
  • Butter
  • Egg yolk
  • Full cream dairy products
  • Shell fish
  • Cream cheese
  • Fatty meat
  • Patés
  • Nuts
  • Sausages and processed meats
  • Liver.
