Formula Student forms a connection between the “dull” theory learned at university and the practical experience gained on and beside the race track. The individual student teams plan, design, and construct their own one-seater racing cars for a fictional manufacturing company.
Formula Student competitions run over several days and cover a range of disciplines. In addition to competing in the technical categories of acceleration, handling, and endurance, the teams also draw up and present their own design reports, business plans and cost calculations. These are then judged by experts from the automotive industry.
The first Formula Student event took place in 1981, when the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) founded the “Formula SAE” in the U.S.A. This was soon followed by races in England, Italy, Japan, and Brazil.
Depending on the countries we support teams in several ways. We offer workshops, knowledge transfer and also our innovations and technologies. Regarding the Formula Student Germany event, Continental AG is one of the main sponsors. In addition to this, the company supports a number of student teams. The teams receive both technical expertise and high-quality products from Continental AG.
A number of our employees are also in a great position to build up a detailed picture of the innovative strengths, technical skills and interests of the students. As judges for individual sub-disciplines, they assess the Formula Student teams at the Hockenheimring, one of the biggest events in Germany.
Automated Driving in Focus
In 2017, there was an exciting novelty: The Formula Student Germany launched a new competition for autonomous racing cars - Formula Student Driverless. For the first time, self-driving vehicles were standing at the starting line including Driverless teams sponsored by Continental. For more information, please have a look here.
