Lightweight Design for Commercial Vehicles

Pistons made from polyamide, hoses made from textile plastic for diesel particulate filters – this is how commercial vehicles are becoming lighter.

Today, air spring systems for commercial vehicles mostly have pistons made from steel or aluminum. An innovative roller piston made from plastic with an integrated buffer support, which Continental developed, makes the systems much lighter now. Up to 15 kilograms per drive axle can be easily saved in this way. Consequently, CO2 emissions are reduced by up to 200 kg over the course of an air spring’s service life.  As they are manufactured using an injection molding process, the lightweight air springs are also extremely resistant to corrosion and long-lasting. This will increase the resale value of the vehicles.

Continental is also making hose lines for commercial vehicles lighter. The newly developed, extremely flexible high-temperature transfer hose for cars, trucks and off-highway applications enables use even in particularly tight and complex installation situations. Thanks to its consistent lightweight construction, the hose is also considerably lighter than the PTFE tubes braided with stainless steel that have been used for these applications up to now. As a result, the hose contributes to a reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
