Road safety thanks to connectivity

Continental’s first intelligent intersection is being tested in the American cities of Columbus, Ohio, and Walnut Creek, California under everyday conditions. These “intelligent intersections” are equipped with LIDAR, radar, and camera sensors at the corners. Powerful algorithms create a detailed picture of the surroundings – at any time of the day, even in adverse weather conditions. The system detects every road user within a 360° radius. It transmits the position and movement of relevant objects to all vehicles in range that are equipped with the appropriate car-to-X technology. Standard Dedicated Short Range Communication, LTE or 5G will be used to exchange information within a few milliseconds between the intersection and connected vehicles, for example to warn drivers of blind spots in front of cyclists.

The Intelligent Intersection continually maps the surrounding environment and exchanges critical information with connected vehicles in real time.

The intelligent intersection is a good example of the interlinking of a wide range of technologies and a further step on the road to our Vision Zero – accident-free driving. Interested parties include public customers of transport authorities and urban planning organizations. A large city contains well over 1,000 intersections. But not location is a candidate for retrofitting.  Engineers and IT specialists are conducting research on the latest generation of intelligent intersections. There, the movement profiles of pedestrians are refined, along with options for traffic counting. 

Meanwhile, in Hamburg, Germany, a mobility partnership is testing the collision warning system for protecting vulnerable road users in particular. With the help of “Mobile Edge Computing,” a cloud-based calculation of potential collisions between cyclists, pedestrians and e-scooter riders will be conducted at critical intersection areas. Road users receive hazard warnings via mobile communications. They can communicate with each other almost in real time.
