Cabin Sensing: Surveillance in the Cockpit

      • Micro cameras and radar capture the entire cockpit of vehicles
      • Continental is already working on upcoming EU regulations with an innovative solution

Continental has developed an innovative solution for monitoring the entire vehicle cockpit. Cabin sensing combines camera data with radar sensors and intelligent software to reliably and in real time detect adults, children, animals and objects inthe vehicle. In this way, the system not only detects the condition and attention of the driver like classic driver monitoring, but also detects, for example, the breathing of children in the rear seat. In addition, the system warns if the driver forgets luggage in a vehicle such as a rental or car share. For the first time, Continental is integrating extremely small cameras directly into the display. In combination with particularly precise radar sensors, all areas of the cockpit are detected equally.

With the cabin sensing system solution, Continental will meet the new requirements of the EU's General Safety Regulation (GSR). From 2024, the European Commission will mandate driver and vehicle monitoring systems for new registrations to detect driver fatigue or lack of attention. In addition, the international driving safety organization Euro NCAP will also reward the installation of camera systems in the cockpit with points from 2023. The voluntary program for the evaluation of the driving safety of new car models provides plans to award assessment points for recognizing children in the future. Child Presence Detection systems warn if, for example, children are left unattended in parked cars.
