Continental launches CrossContact A/T² for balanced on- and off-road performance

  • New Continental CrossContact A/T² developed for balanced on‑ and off‑road performance
  • Designed for SUVs, 4x4 vehicles, electric vehicles, and pick‑up trucks with mixed‑use requirements
  • Aggressive tread design and reinforced construction support traction and durability
  • Features 4x4‑specific compound ensuring consistent grip across varying surfaces

Hanover, July 03, 2026. Continental is expanding its all-terrain tire portfolio with the introduction of the CrossContact A/T², a new all season tire developed for drivers of SUVs, 4x4 vehicles and pick-up trucks who require reliable performance both on paved roads and in demanding off-road conditions. The CrossContact A/T² has been engineered to deliver balanced traction, durability and grip across mixed terrain, while maintaining predictable handling characteristics in everyday driving. It is designed for a wide range of use cases, from daily commuting to off-road travel on gravel, sand, mud or uneven surfaces.

“Our objective with the CrossContact A/T² was to develop a tire that performs reliably in off-road environments while remaining stable and controllable in everyday road use,” said Stefan Torbruegge, Director of R&D for Passenger Tires at Continental Tire. “This required a careful balance between tread aggressiveness, compound design and structural reinforcement to ensure durability without compromising predictable handling.”

Focus on traction across changing surface

The development focus of the CrossContact A/T² includes dependable traction in off-road conditions without compromising control on the road. The tire features an aggressive tread pattern with increased tread depth and a high void ratio, allowing the tread to penetrate loose surfaces and maintain contact when conditions change. Deeper biting edges and reinforced tread block geometry support traction and stability, particularly on gravel and uneven terrain.

At the same time, the adaptive tread design is intended to ensure consistent road contact, helping to reduce wheel slip and support predictable vehicle behavior on wet and dry asphalt.

Reinforced construction for off-road durability

To address the mechanical stresses associated with off-road driving, Continental has equipped the CrossContact A/T² with a reinforced sidewall and a robust off-shoulder design. These elements are designed to improve resistance to cuts, chips and impacts caused by rocks, roots or rough surfaces.

In addition, the rigid tread block pattern reduces the risk of punctures, abrasions and sidewall damage, contributing to increased durability and supporting a longer service life in demanding off-road conditions.

Dedicated compound for consistent grip

The CrossContact A/T² uses a 4x4‑dedicated compound designed to deliver consistent grip across a broad temperature and surface range. The compound retains elasticity in lower temperatures while providing stable performance in wet and dry conditions. In combination with self-cleaning tread elements, the tire helps prevent the buildup of mud or debris that could negatively affect traction.

The CrossContact A/T² will initially be available in nine sizes, covering rim diameters from 15 to 17 inches, suitable for a wide range of SUV, 4x4, electric vehicles and light truck applications.
