Continental Has Obtained ISCC PLUS Certifications for All European Tire Plants
- Continental meets documentation requirements for the use of ISCC PLUS certified renewable and recycled raw materials at all of its European production sites for new tires
- Group sector Tires aims for more than 40 percent renewable and recycled materials in its tires by 2030
- Jorge Almeida, head of Sustainability for Continental Tires: “We have a strong ambition to make our tire production more sustainable worldwide across our entire supply chain.”
Hanover, Germany, June 26, 2025. Continental Tires has reached a further milestone on the path to greater sustainability: all of the group sector’s European production sites where new tires are manufactured have been awarded the internationally recognized International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) PLUS. In addition to the tire plants in Lousado (Portugal), Puchov (Slovakia), Korbach (Germany), and Sarreguemines (France), the tire plants in Otrokovice (Czech Republic) and Timișoara (Romania) are now also among Continental's ISCC PLUS-certified production sites. Moreover, Continental's textile plant Industria Textil do Ave (ITA) in Lousado, which supplies technical textiles and other reinforcing materials for new tire production in Europe, has also been certified. The ISCC PLUS certification confirms Continental’s compliance with specific documentation requirements regarding the use of renewable and recycled raw materials. It also confirms the completely transparent traceability of the raw materials used in the production process. By using certified raw materials, Continental can ensure traceability from renewable and recycled sources. The certification has also been granted to Continental's tire plant in Hefei (China), expanding the company's network of ISCC PLUS-certified sites beyond Europe.
“The ISCC PLUS certification of all our European tire plants is an important milestone and a strong signal for a more sustainable industry in Europe,” says Jorge Almeida, head of Sustainability for Continental Tires. “But we're not stopping there. Our plants in other regions will follow step by step, like our Hefei plant, which is already certified. We have a strong ambition to make our tire production more sustainable worldwide across our entire supply chain.”
This year, Continental is aiming to significantly increasing its use of mass balance-certified materials in tire production. Examples include synthetic rubbers made from bio-based and bio-circular raw materials as well as carbon black that is produced in part using oil from circular processes. For the premium manufacturer, this is a further step on the way to using more than 40 percent renewable and recycled materials in its tire products by 2030.
ISCC PLUS certification is based on compliance with, and documentation of, certain processes relating to the mass balance of raw materials. The mass balance approach mixes fossil, renewable and recycled raw materials in existing systems and processes. The quantities used are tracked along the entire value chain and can therefore be allocated proportionately at any time. The mass balance approach enables Continental to gradually increase the proportion of more sustainable materials in its products. It ensures that the balance of certified, more sustainable materials can be accurately reported.
Complete traceability of mass balance-certified materials
International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) was established in 2010 as part of a multi-stakeholder initiative and is a leading global certification system aimed at promoting a traceable, sustainable, deforestation-free and climate-friendly supply chain. ISCC certifications are recognized worldwide and encompass sustainable agricultural biomass, biogenic waste and residues, non-biological renewable materials and recycled carbon-based materials. The development and implementation of various certification standards is ISCC’s tool for furthering its mission to mitigate climate change and bring greater traceability to global markets and supply chains.
