Hanover, Germany, July 28, 2026. Continental has received original equipment approval for the all-electric Škoda Elroq. The Continental EcoContact 7 in size 235/50 R20 has been approved for the front axle and size 255/45 R20 for the rear axle of the electric SUV. “R20” indicates tires designed for 20-inch rims. Both versions carry the FR marking, which indicates that they have an integrated rim protection rib. This is a reinforced section on the tire sidewall that helps prevent damage to the wheel rim if the tire rubs against a curb. Furthermore, small indentations on the tire surface, known as dimples – similar to those on golf balls – improve aerodynamics and help reduce energy consumption.
The EcoContact 7 is a summer tire designed for low rolling resistance, high mileage and low rolling noise. An optimized rubber compound and tire construction reduce rolling resistance and thus energy consumption. To improve aerodynamics, the company drew inspiration from golf. Golf balls are covered with 300 to 450 dimples, which reduce air resistance while also providing greater lift and a longer, more precise trajectory. Continental has transferred this principle to tire sidewalls, developing its “Aerodimple” structure. The indentations in the sidewalls reduce air turbulence behind the tire, meaning the vehicle requires less energy to keep it moving.
Continental has also focused on quiet driving. The optimized spacing and angles of the tread blocks reduce rolling noise. The tread pattern is designed to align with the noise frequencies typically generated at low speeds when driving in urban areas. As a result, the tire contributes to a quieter ride – for drivers, pedestrians and local residents.
