      Smart Mobility Hackathon

      IoT meets Mobility – This hackathon will give the opportunity to develop and program new features and apps using IoT sensors, cloud services and the driving and status data from a real eScooter. Our subsidiary Continental Engineering Services will provide the necessary equipment and expertise.

      Date and time: 5 p.m. on May 23, 2019, to 4:30 p.m. on May 25, 2019

      Location: Nuremberg, Ofenwerk

      Team: 18 participants (three teams of six)

      Continental will give you €100 toward your travel expenses and will cover food, drink and accommodation. After the event, just send us your travel receipts and we’ll reimburse you. All you need to do is make your own travel arrangements.

      The Challenge in Detail

      The task

      A whole range of IoT features are making mobility and our life more comfortable and convenient all the time – and data, sensors, cloud services and apps play a central role here. Intelligent interconnectivity, processing and the ability to link all kinds of data with the traffic and user environment open up possibilities for new ideas and innovations. So what ideas do you have for new e-scooter features?

      At this hackathon, you will be given actual data from a real eScooter – speed, torque, acceleration, GPS data, driving status, battery status and so on – as well as a telematics control unit for transmitting eScooter data to the cloud. Each team will also have access to a whole range of additional IoT sensors for measuring heart rate, temperature and so on. Let your imagination  run wild – you can even bring your own Bluetooth-capable sensors! 

      When developing your innovative feature or app, it’s entirely up to you which e-scooter data you use and which extra data you create through additional IoT sensors or environmental data.  The ultimate winner will be the team that comes up with a prototype idea or innovative feature/service that, in the opinion of the jury, offers the best user experience.  Challenge accepted?

      Skills needed

      Skills needed

      • Basic cloud/backend knowledge (e.g. with AWS, Microsoft Azure, REST API, etc.)
      • Experience in web software development (C#, JavaScript,, HTML, etc.)
      • Basic knowledge of embedded software development by means of C or C++

      The task will be completed in teams and could also be broken down into subtasks delegated among team members depending on their knowledge and experience. 

      The Equipment

      Continental will provide you with the e-scooter (including CAN data), a telematics control unit and Bluetooth low-energy sensors. All you have to do is bring your own laptop, ideally with a pre-installed development environment for AWS (e.g. Visual Studio (web development), Eclipse, Git).

      And the winner is...

      The winner takes it all! The team which used the availability of its services and the extraction of as many flags as possible to collect the most points will win the contest.

      Each participant of the winning team will receive an Amazon coupon worth € 200.
