It’s all about the Automobile Industry – from Detroit to Hanover

Hello Caitlin, please tell us a bit about yourself.

I’m a Digital Communications Manager for Continental’s Commercial Vehicle Tires business unit. I’m originally from Detroit, Michigan but I’ve been living here – in Hanover, Germany, for almost three years for an international assignment. Aside from work, I am an avid traveler, amateur runner and photographer, and an aspiring foodie.

How did you come to work at Continental?

Detroit, as you know, is synonymous with the automobile industry. The city and its surrounding suburbs resonate with automotive heritage and influence, so it was kind of a natural step for me. I applied for an internship while I was studying at university and that has – more or less – lead me to where I am today. But if I’m completely honest with you, I wasn’t truly passionate about the industry until I started working for Continental. The developing technology and fast-paced environment are really exciting to me!

What do you like most about Continental as an employer?

The people, hands down. My role in communications gives me the opportunity to meet and work with a lot of colleagues – from various functions, hierarchy levels and countries – and I am continuously surprised by the genuine personalities. It seems as though we have a common culture despite all of our diverse characteristics. So for me, it’s the people who make it a great place to work. Additionally, Continental has offered me a lot of potential for growth. We all have the capability to shape our own careers, but it is so important to have support and guidance from the company, especially with managers who are interested in the personal development of their employees.

What is your role at the Commercial Vehicle Tires business unit?

Our business unit provides tires for buses, trucks and specialty vehicles like tractors. They can range in size from a few centimeters to tires that are nearly as big as a person. Currently, we are on a journey from a pure tire manufacturer to an integrated solutions provider. In our view, the tire is a data hub which provides valuable insight that can impact the transportation business, particularly by increasing efficiency. This might sound a bit odd, but it’s a fascinating area. My role is to help communicate this transition to our internal and external stakeholders through our digital, or online, channels.

What do you like about living in Germany?

I feel like the Germans got it right in terms of work-life balance, emphasizing the quality of life. Of course, there are always exceptions to the rule but this is something that I can truly appreciate. That and the bread… the bread is really good.
