Looking back while focusing forward: Nathan´s recap of 6 years after the eXplore program at Continental

Meet Nathan Kabat, a former eXplore Trainee from our 2018/2019 Pool, who today is in charge of the Digital Services Department at our Tire Plant in Mount Vernon, USA.

After graduating from the University of Evansville in 2017 he started his career at Continental with the eXplore program. Learn more about his program experience, career steps & what advice he has for young professionals!

Hi Nathan! Can you share what your career journey has been like since completing the program 6 years ago?

After completing the trainee pool 6 years ago, I accepted a position as an Electrical Engineer in a specific department at the Mount Vernon plant. I held this role for about 7 months before transitioning into the position of Controls and Drives Engineer within the Manufacturing Technology Engineering Department. At the time, it was just me and one technologist in the department. However, after about a year, I started expanding the team, and what was initially a small group evolved into the Digital Services department. Over time, the department grew, and I’m now the Head of Digital Services within the Manufacturing Technology Engineering Department, at Mount Vernon, where I lead a diverse and dynamic team of over 20 engineers, technologists, and specialists. Together, we’re driving the digital transformation at the plant, bringing innovative solutions that enhance operational efficiency and sustainability.

How did the eXplore Program help shape your professional development?

The eXplore Trainee Program was instrumental in shaping my career. It offered a comprehensive perspective on how a large corporation functions, helping me understand the interconnectedness of various departments and operations, both at the plant level and within the corporate structure. Beyond technical knowledge, the program allowed me to forge valuable professional relationships that have remained an essential part of my network. The exposure to different roles and functions was a key factor in building the skills I rely on today.

What advice would you give to recent graduates who are just starting their professional careers?

My advice to fresh graduates is to always strive for continuous learning and personal growth. Every position you take on, no matter how small it may seem, is a valuable learning experience that contributes to your broader career journey. Focus on being of value rather than just seeking success. As Albert Einstein once said, “Strive not to be a success, but rather to be of value.” When you prioritize adding value to your team and organization, success will follow naturally. Additionally, as Steve Jobs wisely put it, “The only way to do great work is to love what you do.” Passion for your work fuels innovation, dedication, and long-term fulfillment. When you combine these two mindsets—aiming to be of value and loving what you do—you set yourself up for not only professional success but also personal satisfaction in your career.
