      Circular Economy

      Circular economy

We strive for 100% closed resource and product cycles.

By 2050 at the latest, Continental plans to close its product and resource cycles and to avoid waste at the end of the product’s service life. Circular economy will be the economic model of the future, because waste is just material in the wrong place.

Circular economy can help to make finite resources infinitely usable, thereby sustainably shaping the economy for the growing and increasingly prosperous world population.

      Circular economy revolutionizes business models

Circular economy means more than a commitment to sustainability, it means the new development of many products with the aim of recovering resources. This is accompanied by a shift to new business models. For example, companies that offer maintenance and recycling of products can generate enormous growth.

90 billion metric tons of materials are used worldwide every year. Some studies even estimate this figure at almost 500 billion metric tons if excavated material is included. Continental produces around four million metric tons of products a year and purchases a comparable quantity of materials and components. The long-term availability and affordability of materials therefore have a direct impact on our business.

The recycling model that is generally applied today is just a small step in the right direction. After all, recycling means that most materials lose their quality in the longer term (so-called downcycling). Current recycling processes can therefore only serve as a transitional solution.

From individual companies to the integrated ecosystem

As the dynamics increase, the circular economies of individual companies are transformed into an integrated ecosystem in which the partners of the value chain work together. In this way, biological, technical and product-related cycles can run smoothly and efficiently. Continental’s early commitment to shaping and advancing this transformation is an advantage for future business and thus for our future viability.

Our ambition is clear: at the latest by 2050, we want to fully close our product and resource cycles together with our partners, and make circular economy a reality.
