Cybersecurity: How is the sector positioned – and what's in store for it?

      Web Session as of September 8, 2020 | 3:00 p.m. CEST

The coronavirus crisis has shown us in no uncertain manner that commercial vehicles are part of the critical infrastructure – and this makes it all the more important for the sector to address the issue of cybersecurity. Commercial vehicles are frequently more connected than the average car and therefore more vulnerable to cyber attacks. However, in their discussions, the specialists have so far focused more on cars. Continental has investigated the significance, perception and importance of cybersecurity in the commercial vehicle industry in a study and will present it to an Expert Group.

Lawmakers finally acted this year, long after the topic was first discussed in public – and in the future, a new UN ECE WP.29 regulation will oblige vehicle manufacturers to guarantee certain minimum standards for commercial vehicles. For example, no type approvals will be issued if no cybersecurity management systems are in place, and this adds much more official weight to the topic. We not only look at the requirements of the new legislation, we also show which strategies and technical solutions are available to meet them.
